NOVA Story
NOVA Fisheries–a cooperative of men and women–began in 1985 when the company was founded in Boston, Massachusetts. NOVA advanced a horizontally designed business platform in fisheries by providing financing, engineering, manufacturing and marketing for vessel operators, processors and fishers themselves. Over the decades NOVA has participated in traditional and aquaculture fisheries in the United States and around the world.
“Horizontal” is about encouraging ownership (financial and/or “sweat equity”) and collaboration. This compared with “Vertical” whereby ownership is singular and often less collaborative.
The Seattle, Washington office became NOVA’s headquarters in 1986 with financing provided by private investors and Rainier National Bank. In the beginning NOVA focused on USA fisheries but it was not long before, one by one, NOVA was involved with a wider array of fishing ventures throughout the world, for crab, scallops and shrimp as well as a multitude of pelagic finfish; these pictorially highlighted on this website’s “Products” page. From traditional ‘wild’ fisheries to fish and shellfish commercial aquaculture, NOVA has been at the forefront of investing and advancing traceable and sustainable fishing practices.
NOVA Fisheries, in just a few words then has been a primary producer, financially committed at the source of many bountiful and carefully managed fisheries while learning and sharing from decades of experience.
Simultaneously NOVA has conducted secondary processing–manufacturing–after the catch is in, to produce portion controlled finished foods for restaurants, retailers and their distributors located in countries around the world.
Accomplishments at NOVA were most notably due to the many people who pioneered innovative production, engineering and computer technology for the company including but not limited to: Luci Nigro, Blair Culter, Jana Kurtz, Michael Lucarelli and Carole Hughes to mention but a few. On this website, under “The Team” we honor the many who worked at NOVA and the many more who helped throughout the years.
The pursuit of convenient, fun, value-added foods is what some say has distinguished us. We want to think so.
But recognition for our many years in business, we believe, goes to:
Our customers who advised us, guided us and all too often pushed us out of our comfort zone to be innovative,
The diversity, creativity and enthusiasm of the many wonderful people who contributed by working at NOVA,
Respect for Mother Nature, unquestionably our Chief Executive Officer
Thank you for your time to read our story,
